DIABETES EDUCATION

The Diabetes Education staff consists of a Registered Nurse and a Registered Dietician. Both staff members are Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists.
Diabetes Education is a multi-layered program offering education on a variety of topics to improve the quality of life of those persons with diabetes and those at risk for developing diabetes. Some of these educational topics include: hypertension, hyperlipidemia, renal disease, hepatic disease, and weight management. Education promoting glucose control is included in the diabetes program along with information on types of diabetes, monitoring blood glucose, continuous glucose monitoring, nutrition, lifestyle modifications, medications, and stress management.
Individual appointments are available for “in person” sessions or education by telephone. Classes are taught in both Atmore, AL and Pensacola, FL for the convenience of our clients. The Diabetes Education Program participates in two grants which allows additional services for participants. These grants may offer assistance with eye care and dental appliances to qualifying persons. They also offer various programs and incentives to promote optimal health through activity and healthy foods.

MEDICAL NUTRITION THERAPY
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is based on decades of medical research on the relationship between diet, nutrition, and health outcomes. MNT instructs individuals how to use their diet to best support their medical conditions. It not only addresses existing medical conditions, but also attempts to lower the risk of new complications.
Medical Nutrition Therapy provides education by a nutrition technologist and registered dietician for a wide variety of medical conditions of Tribal Citizens or first generation descent when ordered by a primary care provider.
